Setting up a RAID 10 scheme in Mac OS X Leopard on a PPC G4
Written by Tada Burke

I'm about to build a RAID scheme in Leopard. Initially, I thought about RAID 5, but since it's currently not supported without hardware, I'm leaning towards either RAID 0 or RAID 10. If I decided to go RAID 0, I'll stripe 4x300 GB HDD's and implement a good backup system over Ethernet. I haven't installed Leopard yet, so I'm extremely curious to see how Time Machine performs. But if I go RAID 10 (1+0), I'll be able to pair 2 redundant mirror's and then back everything up across the network.

Ideally, I should be doing this on a Mac Pro instead of my *favorite* G4 tower - but I can't seem to let this baby go to the graveyard just yet :) It would be cool to see what kind of performance I can get out of this setup and see if it's still a viable workstation for video editing. I mean c'mon, I've been using this machine on single drives for almost 10 years! I've learned over the years that for the true Mac addicts who like to tinker and upgrade - there's no better solution than to experiment and push your machine to its limits.

Plus, I really enjoy knocking out some really sick work with my old gear - and leaving those shiny new Mac Pro users in the dust, haha. I'm criticized all the time about my stubborn attachments to my trusty old Mac's, so it's nothing new. When I get a chance, I'll try to post some benchmarks in case anyone's interested in doing this themselves. But before I attempt this feat that might be moot - I'll post some reviews on Leopard after I play with it for a few days!

UPDATE: 2/8/08 Well, that didn't happen as planned. After installing Mac OS X Leopard and the update, it was like a flurry of Kernal Panics across the board. Researching forums and message boards brought me to similar conclusions. So, unfortunately it's back to Tiger until this gets worked out by our friends over at Apple, Inc.

UPDATE: 2/9/08 Back in Tiger. Not one Kernel Panic. Not one lock-up from sleep. Great.
